Service Columns and Power Poles: Getting Power and Data From Ceiling to Desk
Need power and data from ceiling to desk? Cableaway's SP, SC & Spacepole service columns cover round and rectangular profiles in multiple finishes.
Some spaces just don't have power and data where it's needed - a workstation in the middle of an open-plan office, a lab bench, a retail island display. Chasing cable through a wall or floor isn't always practical. That's where a service column comes in: it drops power, data, and AV straight down from the ceiling space to the point of use, with no structural work involved.
What a Service Column Does
A service column (or service pole) is a vertical channel that runs from ceiling to desk, workstation, or under-bench height, carrying power and data cabling inside it. Outlets are fitted along the column wherever they're needed. Because it doesn't rely on floor or wall access, it's a fast retrofit option as well as a clean solution in new fit-outs.
You'll typically see service columns specified in offices, schools, universities, retail fit-outs, and labs - anywhere a clean ceiling-to-desk power and data drop solves a layout problem that floor boxes or skirting duct can't.
Choosing a Profile: Round or Rectangular
Cableaway's range covers two shapes, in a spread of sizes:
Round columns (SP Series)
- SP32 - 32mm diameter
- SP50 - 50mm diameter
- SP70 - 70mm diameter
Round columns suit a more discreet, minimal look and lower cable volumes - the smaller the diameter, the fewer cables it's designed to carry.
Rectangular columns (SP / SC Series)
- SP7550 - 75 x 50mm
- SP8080 - 80 x 80mm
- SP100100 - 100 x 100mm
- SC8550 - 85 x 50mm
Rectangular profiles give more internal capacity, which matters when a column needs to carry multiple power circuits alongside data and AV cabling, or when several outlets are mounted along its length.
Finishes
SP32, SP50, SP70, SP7550, SP8080, and SP100100 are each available in:
- Natural anodised
- Pearl white
- Satin black
The SC8550 Series (85 x 50mm rectangular) gets a fourth option on top of those three - black ripple - making it the only profile in the range with four finish choices.
Matching the column finish to ceiling grid, joinery, or wall colour keeps it from standing out as an afterthought.
When a Rigid Column Won't Fit
Not every ceiling void or service run is a straight vertical drop. For those cases, Cableaway's umbilical flexible spine carries the same cabling through a flexible housing instead of a rigid column - useful where obstructions or offsets rule out a standard pole.
Picking the Right Size
A quick way to think about it:
| Need | Suggested Range |
|---|---|
| Single GPO + minimal data, discreet look | SP32 or SP50 round |
| Standard workstation power + data | SP70 round or SP7550 rectangular |
| Multiple outlets, power + data + AV | SP8080 or SP100100 |
| Offset run or obstruction in the ceiling void | Umbilical flexible spine |
Spacepole Series - Vertical Columns
Alongside the core SP and SC ranges, Cableaway also carries the Spacepole Series - Vertical Columns (the ESPC Space Pole), formerly part of the Esco product range and now folded into Cableaway's ESCO Cable Management line.
Like the SP/SC columns, the Spacepole is a high-quality extruded aluminium service column built to deliver power, data, and communication services from the ceiling down to a workstation or bench. It's commonly specified in commercial, retail, and office fit-outs, as well as laboratory environments where a clean, segregated vertical service outlet is needed.
Key points that set it apart:
- Available in a range of lengths and finishes, so it can be matched to ceiling heights and project colour schemes rather than being limited to a single standard size
- Service segregation within the column keeps power, data, and communications cabling separated along the run
- Integrates with a range of outlet and accessory options to suit the specific project
- A dedicated spec sheet PDF is available for project documentation
Where the SP/SC ranges are the go-to for standard office and workstation power poles, the Spacepole is worth considering for laboratory fit-outs or projects where the Esco-style ESPC unit is already the specified standard.
